Medicine in Kenya is a two-month elective in Eldoret, Kenya, during which students participate in the 30-year AMPATH partnership between IU and Moi University in Kenya. Students are able to learn by completing time in any combination of internal medicine, pediatrics, OBGYN and general surgery. All expenses are paid for by the student.
The official policy of IU and IU School of Medicine is that international student electives are not yet able to resume due to COVID. However, for those who are interested in completing the Kenya elective in 2021-2022, we will work to schedule them in hopes that international travel can safely resume by that time. Students interested in the elective are strongly advised to schedule now, as it can be quite difficult to get two contiguous months free after the required electives are scheduled by IU School of Medicine.
There will be an informational meeting on Monday, January 11 at 7 pm for anyone interested in the elective. For those who wish to do the elective in 2021-2022, there will be a required scheduling lottery meeting on Thursday, January 14 at 5 pm. Students interested in the elective must be present at the January 14 meeting or send a proxy that can indicate scheduling preferences.
